Strider's Who Am I Page!Ever wonder just how much info you are handing out when you surf the web? Or maybe you just wonder what IP number your ISP handed you when you logged in this time. Whatever reason you wound up here, let's take a quick look at what info the WebPages you visit can learn about you. To see what you are passing to all the servers you visit, Click Here. This segment is generated in the computer you are using right now, and will only work if you have Java turned on in the browser. If you were thinking that information generated on the Client side is not availible to the server, then you need to look into what Cookies are and the various ways you can generate and retrieve them. The Client side info here was gathered using JavaScript, which can also write cookies from the Client. The info gathered by the Server can be written to Server-side Cookies. Any Cookies can be shared between any pages on the same server, and if there are any includes on the page from another server (like DoubleClick, RealPlayer, etc.), then the cookies can be accessable across multiple servers and domains. So that is your introduction to the info the Web can collect on you. Some of this you can control by setting your security level in your browser, using firewalls, turning Java on or off, etc. Some of it you can only stop by not going online at all. One of the most important controls you can have is to have your browser tell you when it is offered a cookie, and setting it so it allows you to decide wether to accept it after you examine the cookie contents. As always, it is YOUR web! Use it the way that makes sense to you! JerryS
